Sound Installation at New Media Society

“Stop en Luister, Den Haag!” (“Stop and Listen, The Hague!”) will be running for two nights at New Media Society in Tehran. Please come visit, have a listen, have a cup of tea.

A few words about my work:

Stop en Luister, Den Haag! is a series of six pieces documenting six different, sonically interesting locations in the city of The Hague. What does The Hague sound like? Are there sounds that we can find all around the city, defining it sonically and distinguishing it from other places? Will it sound different in five years, in ten years, in twenty years?
I carefully record my environment, sometimes returning at various times of the week and day, to be able to record all that a place has to offer. I select the most typical and interesting sounds, sometimes out of hours of material collected, and arrange it into a musical composition for the listener. I detect rhythms and patterns and layer them. I cut my sound files and use volume changes and panning, but never any effects. The goal is to provide a work that is artistically interesting while creating an authentic portrait of a place. I am preserving something that might be gone sooner than we expect. (Will there be drones flying through my recordings in the future? Will the trams be less characteristic once replaced with more current models? What will transportation sound like twenty years from now?)

چیدمان – بایست و بشنو! لاهه

این چیدمان مجموعه‌ای‌ است از شش قطعه صوتی ، که در شش مکان مختلف در شهر لاهه که به لحاظ شنیداری جالب توجه اند ، تهیه شده است. صدا و آوای شهر لاهه چگونه است؟ آیا این ها اصواتی هستند که می توانیم در گوشه و کنار شهر بشنویم ، به لحاظ شنیداری بازشناسیم و از سایر مکان‌ها تشخیص دهیم؟ آیا در طول پنج، ده یا بیست سال آینده این آوا دچار دگرگونی خواهد شد ؟
من با دقت به ضبط محیط پیرامونم پرداختم. گاهی برای اینکه قادر به ضبط تمام آنچه که یک مکان مشخص برای عرضه دارد، چندین بار در طول هفته یا روز به آن مکان مراجعه کردم. من اصوات جالب و تیپیکال را برگزیدم؛ گاهی بیش از چندین ساعت صداهای خام گردآوری می‌کردم، و با تنظیمشان قطعاتی موسیقایی برای شنوده ساختم. ریتم، هارمونی، الگوها و لایه‌های آن‌ها را کشف کردم. بخش‌هایی از فایل‌های صوتی را حذف کردم، در بلندی صدا تغییراتی را اعمال، و قسمت‌هایی از آنها را ترکیب کردم. اما هرگز از افکت استفاده نکردم .هدف تولید اثری است که به طور هنرمندانه و جالب توجهی سیمای معتبری از یک مکان ارایه کند. من چیزی را که ممکن است پیش از زمانی که ما انتظار داریم نابود شود، حفظ میکنم .\r\n(آیا زنبورهای در حال پرواز در فایل های ضبط شده من در آینده وجود خواهند داشت ؟ آیا ترامواها هنگامی که با وسایل حمل و نقل رایج تر امروز جایگزین شوند ، مشخصات ویژه کمتری خواهند داشت ؟ در بیست سال آینده صدای سیستم حمل و نقل چگونه خواهد بود؟)
